Nazaré, home of the Largest wave ever surfed! A big waves sea, a high cliff to watch from and a nice village down bellow to resort to after seeing the surfers take their chances against huge masses of water. And that's just for starters: we descend to Lisbon visiting the sand dunes in S.Martinho, the 19th century spa park of Caldas, the walled city of Obidos and a few more spots on the coast. See below for a preview.
Surfers from all over the world come to Nazaré to measure against the waves that form over the submarine canyon, reaching up to 25 metres high.
It's absolutely awe-inspiring.
A perfect half-circle bay, 50-metre high sand dunes and a tunnel to peak outside the bay...add the local Pão-de-ló (fluffy cake and custard filling) and you have enough reasons to drop by...
Caldas da Rainha has been a spa destiny since the Middle Ages when it was established by Royal decree in 1484. The 19th century park retains an aura of a past epoque. The fruit market, the local pastry and ceramic artwork all add up as good reasons to visit.
If castles are your thing, Óbidos is the next logical stop. Impeccably preserved like a nativity scene, Óbidos is an obvious tourist destination that nevertheless deserves every time spent there.
The return to Lisbon is by secondary roads; we check out the beach at Guincho, to admire its setting against the mountain of Sintra just before we enter the Capital city. Guincho is a regular destiny for the Professional Windsurfers Association Tour.
